Goldcorp: Land lease for nothing

This report is part of our former „Harmful Cases“ documentation, where we continuously and concisely recorded human rights violations, violations of international law or environmental destruction caused by companies.

The Canadian mining company Goldcorp. operates a gold mining site in Peñasquito, Mexico. Farmers claim that they have been paid a bargain by Goldcorp. for the lease of their land. They gave the land for a period of 30 years to the company and were once paid 1 peso per square meter (0,00744 USD). Another mine, Camino Rojo“ is situated on land for which the company paid 4,35 pesos.

Communities  demand the contracts to be re-negotiated. They blocked the main entrance of one of the mining sites but were removed by police forces. 7 people were injured.
