Germany as well as many other states stand for the aim of global nuclear disarmament as nuclear weapons are the most destructive weapons that have ever been developed. Yet, global financial institutions (FIs) do only insufficiently or not at all adhere to the “Global Zero” commitment which aims to create a world without nuclear weapons. On the contrary, by managing and issuing shares and bonds of as well as issuing loans to manufacturers of nuclear weapons these institutions support the modernization and manufacturing of the N°1 weapon of mass destruction. This stands in stark contrast to the “Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons” (NPT) which obliges signatory states to contribute to the general and complete nuclear disarmament.1

The Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons ICAN will present the most recent global study “Don’t Bank on the Bomb!” on Friday, 7th November in Berlin. The study compiled by the Dutch NGO PAX names hundreds of financial institutions that finance companies which manufacture nuclear warheads and launcher systems (missiles, bombers, submarines etc.) and lists the FIs interests in those. Also German investors have extensive financial ties to manufacturers of nuclear weapons. Furthermore, Germany is directly invested in the Airbus Group.
