Switzerland will soon begin exporting arms on a case-by-case basis to politically unstable regions and countries with known human rights violations, such as Egypt or Pakistan. The decision, which passed by a single vote, overturns regulations introduced in 2008 that outlaw arms sales to countries exhibiting “systematic human rights violations” Several Swiss organizations, like Alliance Sud, criticize the move as favoring economic and industry interests over quelling worldwide crises. The decision comes on the heels of a 34% slump in Swiss arms sales between 2012 and 2013.
