Drone Strikes: Pakistan condemns US policy at UN Human Rights Council

Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Zamir Akram has raised the issue of drone strikes at the general debate on all human rights of the UNHCR. He generally stated that the use of force in the context of counter-terrorism had been responsible for severe human rights violations. Concerning extrajudicial killings through drone strikes, he stressed that those attacks violate humanitarian and human rights laws as well as Pakistan’s sovereignty. Additionally, he deemed the policy as counterproductive to tackle terrorism and stressed that many civilians died from the strikes.
