Record Fine for US Mining Company

On March 5th 2014, Alpha Natural Resources (along with Alpha Appalachian Holdings and 66 subsidiaries), one of the US’s largest coal mining companies, agreed to invest $200 million on installations and upgrades along with a $27 million dollar fine as part of a settlement reached with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Glencore Receives the “Black Planet Award”

In Novemeber 2012, the ethecon Foundation Ethics & Economics awarded their “Black Planet” award to the Swiss commodity trading company, GLENCORE. The foundation recently presented the award to Glencore’s executives, including Ivan Glasenberg, Simon Murray, and Tony Hayward, as well as some of their prominent shareholders at Glencore’s annual shareholder meeting on 16 May 2013.
