Bumitama Agri Ltd: Ladang Sawit Mas (LSM) Plantation

In March 2013, four orangutans were rescued by International Animal Rescue (IAR) from the LSM plantation in Indonesia and were relocated. Endangering orangutans is illegal under Indonesian law. The International Animal Rescue filed a complaint against Bumitama at the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, related to environmental and habitat destruction.1

Although Bumitama committed to stop clearing land until a HCV assessment was undertaken at Ladang Sawit Mas (LSM), satellite images show that between Aril 2013 and August 2013 500 hectares of land were cleared. Further satellite images from November 2013 and February 2014 show that Bumitama’s LSM plantation continues to clear land, in breech of its latest commitment to RSPO from October 2013. The imagery is shared by AidEnvironment with RSPO and shows land clearing inside and north of a water conservation area in LSM.2
